Be Kind Rewind (2008)

Michel Gondry, maker of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, has made another visual and surreal masterpiece.

Two video store clerks desperately try to save a dying movie rental house by making remakes with a VHS camera. They surprise themselves by becoming local celebrities and then by attracting unwanted attention from copyright holders.

The movie is part science-fiction, part comedy, and all social commentary. The death of community in urban centres is revealed by showing what the life could be.

The ultimate charm of the piece is the simplicity of the characters and the way they are revived through creativity. It is interesting that the medium of film, which is quite passive, can be transformed into an active venture when people put themselves in front of and behind the camera.

Truth: Nothing is as captivating nor as meaningful as something made in community by the community.
