Once Upon a Time in the Midlands (2002)
This more or less comedic drama focuses on relationships in the new era of broken families.
The British midlands are populated with the equivalent of an American trailer park culture - a lot of heart, just bad taste and poor education. When Dek (played superbly by superb actor Rhys Ifans) is turned down on a televised proposal, he is placed in limbo. He becomes even more secluded with his girl's former lover and father of their child returns to reclaim his right to the house.
The film could easily be criticized for all of the overtly poor choices the characters make - making it a little inaccessible for viewers who either crave reality or fantasy. But the men and women prominently wear their hearts on their sleeves making the film a slice of humanity that is enjoyable and thoughtful.
