In the Valley of Elah (2007)
Paul Haggis (Crash) produces another dramatic and gritty film. This time he addresses U.S. Army culture and the violence it breeds.
When a soldier goes A.W.O.L. after returning from Iraq, his father embarks on a mission to find him. His investigation reveals as much about himself, an army veteran, as it does about his son's disappearance and strange behaviour.
The acting is very powerful in a subdued way, producing the effect of thought rather than shock. The subject matter is disturbing and raw.
