The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans (2009)
The latest of Werner Herzog's magnificent films is a dramatic and dark look at an unlikable officer of the New Orleans police force.
Terence McDonagh is awarded some stripes after a heroic deed during the Katrina disaster, but it leaves him fighting a painful injury that he self-prescribes cocaine for. His policing pursuits take a back seat to his pursuit of drugs and a so begins a quick and dangerous spiral downward into criminal chaos.
The film is full of turns and not the mystery kind, we try hard to like Terence, but it gets more difficult as the story plays out. The acting and direction is superb in drawing you into some very dark places of the heart and the intensity that lives there.
