The Young Victoria (2009)

A British period piece that doesn't suck! It is even successfully romantic and political at the same time.

One of the most powerful and influential monarchs in history faces pressure from all sides as she begins her reign over the British Empire. Her mother's husband desires to be her regent until she is older. The charming prime minister wishes to influence her towards his party to the benefit of himself. As she seeks her own path, she fends off suitors from the continent.

The power in the film is the style and honesty brought out. There is much more subtlety than we usually get (Elizabeth: The Golden Age is not nuanced for example). This is a masterpiece.

I agree. One of the best movies of this type I've ever seen. Highly enjoyed.
