Vénus beauté (institut) (1999)
Venus Beauty Institute is a strong reflection on relationships, aging, and pride.
Three women toil in a beauty salon in Paris, offering massages, facials, tanning, waxing, make-up, and perhaps most importantly a place for women to confess their fears, sins, and shortcomings. We see the insecurities of each of the beauty technicians as they enter and exit relationships and fear the onset of age.
The film is not unremarkable because it is more than just a collection of oddball characters; we witness their vulnerabilities and insecurities. The women's voices are of a liberated generation who were taught that they could live independently of men more fully than in a relationship with them.
